How To Turn Your Formica Countertops To Stone

Formica countertops are durable and last a long time but at some point you may want to give your Formica countertop a facelift. For under $200 your counters will look like new! Here’s how to turn your Formica countertops to stone.

Before you start you will need ammonia cleaner, some fine sandpaper, a small roller and a dozen foam rollers. You’ll also need primer, 4 cans of Rustoleum Stone Creations spray paint and 1 can of polyurethane clear finish.

Now that you have all your supplies together it’s time to get started.

1. Schedule your kitchen off limits for 3 days. Make arrangements so that you can serve meals without using your countertops. Eat out, order pizza, or use an alternative to your counters.

2. Clean off the entire counter area. Use a soft brush and run a vacuum over them.

3. Wash them with warm soapy water and let air dry. Repeat.

4. Now wash them with the ammonia cleaner and rinse well. Let them dry and then repeat the process.

5. Now it’s time to lightly sand the surface. You can do this by hand or you can use a palm sander which will make the task much easier. The light sanding will remove grease that has soaked into the countertop and it will also rough up the surface so that the paint has something to adhere to.

6. Once you are done sanding wipe everything down with a warm soapy cloth. Rinse and let dry.

7. Next you need to tape everything off that you aren’t painting. Don’t get lazy and skip this step. You are going to be working with spray paint and it will get all over!

8. The primer is applied to the entire counter using the foam roller. You need to work slowly so you don’t get air bubbles. Follow the directions on the can and let dry the entire recommended time.

9. Now it’s time to spray the counters with the stone paint you purchased. Rustoleum is what I recommended but of course there are other great products on the market. You’ve already chosen your color so now it’s time to apply. When you spray it you will notice it has a bit of a pebble effect. This is what provides the stone effect.

10. Apply the first coat and let dry. You will need at least 3 of the 4 cans you purchased, perhaps all 4. Keep one for a spare for touchups later on.

11. Apply your second coat making sure that you get any spots that were missed with the first coat. Let dry.

12. Apply the third coat and a fourth coat if necessary. The more coats the thicker the application will look.

13. Once your paint is completely dry – 24 hours preferably – then it is time to apply the polyurethane. Use your foam roller and go slow so it doesn’t bubble on you.

14. Apply as many coats as you like until the preferred look is achieved. Between each coat be sure to let it dry thoroughly.

That’s it. Suddenly your kitchen looks like it has had a complete facelift.

Now remember your countertops need the same consideration as any new counters. Make sure you don’t cut directly on the top as it will cut and scratch. Don’t sit your hot pots or pans directly on the counter, use a trivet. Clean it regularly and feel free to reapply the polyurethane at any time to keep it looking fresh.

It’s truly an amazing transformation turning your Formica countertops to stone.

8 Ways To Lose Facial Fat

Want to lose fat in your face? Unhappy with that fat chin? Feel like those fat cheeks are making you look “chipmunky?”

First, let’s acknowledge that spot reduction of fat, through exercise or dieting anyway, is not possible. It would be nice if we could target our problem areas — thighs, a spare tire, flabby arms, or in this case a chubby face — and concentrate our efforts on melting the fat from those specific places. Nice, but not realistic.

That doesn’t mean the situation is hopeless. Here are all the ways that I am aware of for helping to get rid of a fat face, or at least diminish its plump appearance.

1. Exercise and diet to lose overall body fat.

When we lose weight we tend to lose fat from over our whole bodies. If you are overweight, then sensible dieting along with a regular cardiovascular workout will burn fat from all areas, including your face. For some people the difference will be dramatic, for others less so, but all should enjoy some improvement in facial appearance. Remember: Spot fat loss through exercise isn’t possible, but fat loss is.

2. Drink more water.

Drinking eight big glasses of water a day has been proven to aid in weight loss. Sometimes when we think we’re hungry, our body is actually just thirsty. Drinking lots of water can take the edge off our “hunger” and keep us from overeating, thus helping us to lose fat.

There’s another reason to drink water, though. Sometimes a fat looking (or puffy) face is caused by bloating, the body’s retention of fluid as a response to being water deprived. If you’re a woman–especially if you’ve just come through a pregnancy or are experiencing menopause–this could be part of the problem. So drink up! Good ol’ H20, that is.

3. Firm up your face.

Some people swear by facial exercise; others consider it silly and question it effectiveness. It won’t hurt to try it for a few weeks or a couple of months to see if it works for you. Remember, your aim here is to tighten and firm your skin, not to try to spot-reduce the underlying fat (since that’s impossible anyhow).

Here’s an old one for firming up a double chin: Using the back (top) of your hand, slap/tap the bottom of your chin rapidly yet firmly. Do this often, whenever you think of it.

For cheeks: Sit. Relax. Smile, keeping your lips closed. Now suck in your cheeks and hold them in while you count 8 seconds. Relax and repeat at least ten times. This is a good one to do while driving, as it requires no hands to perform. Another exercise for your cheeks is simply to smile as wide as you can (lips closed) as you imagine you are trying to touch your ears with the corners of your mouth.

4. Get older.

This is the easiest way of all to lose fat from the face — it only requires patience!

If you’re in your teens, twenties or even thirties, your roundish face might be caused by baby fat that has yet to melt. Give it some time, and meanwhile be sure to work on reducing your overall body fat if need be. As people age they tend to lose a lot of their facial fat. The drawback to this natural process is that by their fifties, some people end up with excessively gaunt looking faces. That’s a problem to tackle another day, though.

5. Lose face fat the magician’s way.

Magicians use misdirection to deceive. You can “lose” the fat in your face the same way — by misdirecting the viewer’s attention and by disguising the roundness.

Sorry, guys — these are women-only subterfuges … unless you are into makeup or have long hair. And so, ladies …

If you have a double chin you want to camouflage, I’m told that adding some blush along your jaw line will do the trick. Start from just below your ears and brush it all the way to your chin, making sure to blend. If you also put a spot of white powder on the tip of the chin for a highlight, the overall effect will be dramatically slimming.

Similarly, to make your face look thinner, just brush bronzer over your cheekbones and temples, as well as under your chin. Boost the effect with white-powder highlights on chin tip, cheeks, forehead and the bridge or your nose.

Finally, ask your hairdresser for a style that will either hide or draw attention away from a round face. Hairdressers are experts in knowing which styles are best for which face shapes.

6. One word: Ultrasound.

Ultrasound is increasingly being used for cosmetic purposes. A special ultrasound machine can be employed to send energy deep beneath the skin, where it liquifies underlying fat cells without harming tissue or nerve cells. The liquified fat is then expelled naturally by the body–or at least that’s what proponents and practitioners of ultrasound therapy claim.

7. One other word: Liposuction.

Liposuction is more invasive than ultrasound therapy by itself. It can also be combined with ultrasound. As you probably know, liposuction involves making one or more small incisions in the skin, inserting tiny “vacuum hoses” and suctioning out the fat. It works particularly well on double chins and jowls, and can be used to “deflate” fat cheeks, too.

8. Two words: Cosmetic surgery.

Celebs do it. Average people do it. For some, results are stupendous. For a few, they’re a nightmare. Botched jobs do happen. And in any case, facelifts and similar cosmetic procedures are expensive.

This article on ways to lose fat from the face wouldn’t have been complete without mentioning ultrasound, liposuction and cosmetic surgery. I deliberately did not go into detail about them.

If you are considering having any costly or invasive procedure to reduce facial fat (or for any other purpose), you need to do your own due diligence. Talk to people who’ve had the same procedure. Research it through the Internet. Get your doctor’s opinion, advice and perhaps a referral. Learn about costs, side effects, recovery time and possible complications. Most importantly, gain a realistic understanding of what the procedure can and cannot do for your appearance. That way you’ll avoid disappointment.

A DIY Guide for Vacuum Cleaner Repair

It always seems that your vacuum will malfunction right before company is set to arrive. What do you do if your vacuum is not working correctly? Many people will simply throw away their vacuum and purchase a new one. However, did you know that it is quite easy to repair a vacuum cleaner?

You can find a lot of great information by checking out the website of the manufacturer who made your vacuum. For instance, if you have a Hoover vacuum, you can learn specifically about Hoover parts and how they work.

In order to repair the problem, you first need to determine what is wrong with your vacuum cleaner.

There are actually not a lot of vacuum parts which malfunction. The most common problem is a belt malfunction. To check out the vacuum cleaner belt, you will want to flip the vacuum on its front so that the brush is facing you. You will notice a small plate around the brush. Unscrew this. Check the belt. It is possible that it has snapped or has wrapped itself around a portion of the brush. If it is broken, you will want to take the belt with you to a store to purchase a new one. Many stores carry vacuum cleaner parts, including stores like Walmart and Target. You should be able to identify the proper size belt and many times a package will contain several size belts making it easier to insure you have the right one. Vacuum cleaner belts are not expensive at all.

You also will want to check the vacuum agitator brush. Sometimes it can become tangled with hair, pieces of carpet or string. You should use a pair of scissors to cut all of that out. Once it is clean, you can simply replace the belt and screw the plate back on the front.

If your vacuum is having poor suction, you might have something blocking one of the hoses. Remove the hoses one at a time, consulting your owner’s manual if needed. If you have trouble reaching the blockage you can use the end of a mop or broomstick to push the obstruction through.

It also makes sense to do some routine maintenance on your vacuum. You will want to check the vacuum filter frequently to insure that it is not too dirty or blocked. The vacuum filter can affect the performanace of your machine. Also check the cord of your vacuum to make sure that it hasn’t become frayed. Vacuum cords can often become damaged when they are run over by the vacuum.

Most of the problems you have with your vacuum will be related to either the agitator brush, the belt, or a blockage. You can save yourself a lot of time and money if you do the repairs yourself. You will be surprised how easy it is.

Sometimes a vacuum has electrical problems and those are a lot more difficult to fix on your own. In that case it is probably better to take it to someone who knows how to repair vacuums or make the move to a new machine.

Next time you have vacuum trouble, try these simple tricks. They might just breathe new life back into your vacuum!
